2012 Diocesan Development Fund Begins

Did you know that when we became a diocese back in 1978 we had 118 diocesan priests
and 256,000 Catholics?  Now we have 65 diocesan priests and 1,200,000 Catholics.  This is a blessing, but how will we continue to minister to an increasing Catholic population?  With your faith, nothing will be impossible.

The 2012 Diocesan Development Fund gives us the opportunity to act together as a diocesan family and support programs and services that are vital to our Catholic faith, such as Vocations, Religious Education and our Youth.  Every gift, regardless of size, ensures the success of the DDF appeal.  All registered parishioners should have already received information and pledge forms in the mail.  (If you have not received this information, extra forms and info are available on the church credenzas.)  Please take time this week to reflect and pray about the blessings you are called to share with your Catholic family!

We are blessed by the generosity of so many at St. Matthew!  We are especially grateful to parishioners John and Patty Richards, of Pacific Restoration Group, who donated and planted our nine new trees on the east side of our parking lot.  These trees will replace the large pines we have had to remove due to root damage.

Coming Up - Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week begins January 29.  Many in our parish family attend our local Catholic school, St. Edward, Corona.  As a parish, we cooperate with St. Edward School and we in turn are blessed by the continued involvement here at St. Matthew of so many families who attend the school.

Peace!

Lou Ann Tannaz

Pastoral Associate

Pilgrimage to Celtic Ireland

For the last two years I have been thinking about offering a pilgrimage.  Most pilgrimages are to Rome or the Holy Land or to various shrines in Europe.  I thought that Celtic Ireland would be a fascinating trip.  Working with Maureen Abramson, who did a lot of the footwork in contacting as agent in Ireland, we have come forth with a wonderful trip to beautiful Ireland that will revolve around Celtic history and Celtic spirituality.  The trip is 13 days including two days for travelling.  The agent in Ireland has come up with a wonderful and interesting itinerary where we will travel both in the south and the north of Ireland visiting various historical places including the shrine of our Lady of Knock, the shrine of the pilgrim people of God.  We will go June 18th to June 30th, 2012.

You can view the itinerary and cost breakdown here.  If you are interested in going or want more information you can email celtictrip@aol.com.

Diocesan Development Fund News

Many thanks to all who have contributed to our 2011 DDF fund.  Your generosity has supported our diocesan programs as well as our parish efforts.  We have reached our goal, and all contributions are now being returned to our parish.

All 2011 DDF gifts need to be received in the Diocesan Development Office by Thursday, January 12, 2012.

Gifts received after that date will be applied to the 2012 DDF.

Using Online Giving or Your Envelope Really Helps!
It's much easier for our volunteer counters to count your church contributions if you use the envelopes mailed to you every two months and even easier for you if you opt for online giving.  The envelopes have your name and address preprinted on them, just fill in the amount.  Online giving can be automatic for weekly donations or manual for special collections and is safe and secure.  Please help us to keep accurate records for your end of the year statement.  We appreciate your help.

How Safe is
the Internet for
Our Kids?
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has many resources to help you answer your questions and also set up filters and guidelines for internet connections for children and youth.  Check out www.missingkids.com.

To find more information on the web go to www.netsmartz.org.  Teach internet safety.  Other resource examples for parents can be found at www.netsmartz411.org.  Read or search their library.  Here are some of the topics found in their library:
  • What are some chat room, internet & email safety tips I can share with my child?
  • What can I do to keep my child safer while using instant messaging (IM) services?
  • What are the risks of using webcams and Video/Photo sharing?
  • A classmate put videos on YouTube with my daughter's full name. What can I do?
  • What should I do if I think my child is talking to a predator online?

Social Concerns

Did you know that there are more than 49 million Americans living in poverty?

OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE is one of the main principles in Catholic Social Doctrine.

The purpose behind it is to enable the poor to become active participants in the life of society.

It is not an adversarial slogan that pits one group against another.  Rather it states that the deprivation and powerlessness of the poor wounds the whole community.  The extent of their suffering is a measure of how far we are from being a true community of persons.  These wounds will be healed only by greater solidarity with the poor and among the poor themselves.

Anointing of the Sick

The Gospels show us that Christ cured the sick and brought them to their feet by the laying-on of hands.  This tangible sign of healing is available to us throughout our lives.  It is not necessary to wait until the last moment before asking for anointing; a serious illness, any major operation, or simply the on set of old age, are reason enough to receive this sacrament in faith.  When a person has been anointed within a few months of becoming gravely ill, it is not necessary to be anointed again as the person is dying.  Please notify the parish office so a visit can be arranged.

Instrumentalists, Singers and Liturgical Dancers

We are looking for persons with musical talent within our community.  If you play a musical instrument, flute, clarinet, trumpet, piano (Ann Miranda is looking for a piano player) or have some experience in ballet dancing, or would like to sing in the choir, we invite you to join us in our liturgical celebrations.

If interested, please call:
Ann Miranda at 941-255-1214
or Fr. Neil at 951-272-3523
